Equity

We live in a diverse community that is growing more diverse each day. To fulfill our core mission of flood safety, we are committed to investing in the diversity and cultural competency of our workforce and increasing the transparency and accessibility of our programs and projects. We’re also working hard to learn how best to address systemic inequities and to provide support and tools to our staff, board members, and community partners to help ensure equitable outcomes related to our work.

The MCDD Board approved an Equity Policy (see it to the right) during the fall of 2020. The policy provides an equity vision, mission, goals, and guiding principles. The policy calls for the creation of an agency-wide equity action plan and department-specific equity work plans.

MCDD strives to engage and collaborate with people who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve to shape decision-making, programs, and policies.

We are committed to embracing diversity and upholding our organizational value of inclusiveness. Sustaining and celebrating a workplace culture of diversity, inclusion, and respect is critical to MCDD’s success and the safety of the people who live, work, and travel through the district.

By reflecting the growing diversity of the community we serve, we will be better prepared to prevent and manage flooding and improve outcomes for everyone. Embracing diversity in our business operations and our workforce culture to serve our increasingly diverse community simply makes sense.

With the equity policy as a guide, we support and encourage staff and elected board members to take personal and collective responsibility for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion at the agency and across the district.
